Advanced Trouble Shooting Common Coffee Machine Errors

If you have purchased a coffee machine for your home, commercial space or facility, staying on top of your service and maintenance schedule is important. Your machine is calibrated to produce excellent results, and that means that from time to time, it may need an adjustment or coffee machine repairs to ensure it keeps producing the smooth, delicious brew you love.

While each machine will have a manual to ensure you are aware of the specifics you need to know to keep it in tip-top condition, there are a few general troubleshooting tips you can follow so that if something doesn’t seem quite right, you can potentially sort it out yourself.

Read on if you are in charge of the break room machine, you are smashing out coffees front of house or you have an automatic or capsule machine at home as we run you through some advanced troubleshooting for common coffee machine errors. While we are going to focus on your commercial coffee machine today, some of these tips will apply at home or at work.

Cafes & Restaurants

If you have chosen one of our commercial machines like the Carimali Cento 2 Group, a La San Marco 20/20 Classic or the popular La Marzocco Linea 3 Group, you will need to be aware of the daily cleaning requirements and a few of the things that can crop up as you make thousands of magnificent coffees. Being able to sort issues out yourself will save you money and time, and having a local team available for coffee machine repairs means you always know that help is available should you need it.

Machine Won’t Power On

Just arrived at work at the crack of dawn and the commercial machine won’t power on? Start simple. Make sure the plug hasn’t been knocked out and try another outlet just in case the power source is the issue. If that doesn’t fix it, inspect the circuit breaker or fuse box to see if the breakers have tripped or a fuse has blown. If you aren’t having any luck, it’s time to consult your manual or call your coffee machine service technician.

Steam Wand Issues

Your steam wand is an integral part of your setup, and it needs to function well so you can produce the velvety, creamy milk you are famous for. A drop in pressure or insufficient steam can produce milk that is poorly heated or overly frothy, watery milk. Your steam wand can get clogged from time to time, and a good start towards sorting this out is to use the Cafetto MFC Blue alkaline solution, which is specifically designed to safely clear out and clean your frother. Follow the instructions, and chances are you will be good to go in no time; if you are still having issues, your Segafredo Zanetti coffee machine repairs team will be standing by to assist.

Substandard Extraction

When your reputation depends on customer satisfaction, every shot needs to be perfectly extracted. A well extracted shot is a thing of beauty, but substandard extraction can result in dirty shots, a bitter taste or a weak watery result.

If you are noticing less than stellar outcomes, then start by checking your grind; if the grind is too coarse the pour will be too fast, and the flavour will lose intensity. If the grind is too fine, the pour may be oily and bitter as the water struggles to make its way through the grind. The basket needs to have the right amount of coffee, it needs to be tamped just right, and the spread of coffee must be even for the best results.

If all these components are aligned properly and you are still having issues, it may be that your group head gasket needs replacing or your grinder burrs are wearing out. Call the Segafredo Zanetti technicians for coffee machine service to ensure your extractions are on point for every pour.

Daily & Monthly Maintenance

Throughout the day, it is important to pause and clean your cafe or restaurant machine. You should be backflushing your machine daily with salts if you are running a high-traffic business,. You can also do a quick backflush with your blind basket and water at the end of a busy period. When you have a clear moment or two, flush, use your dedicated brush to clean the group head and flush again. When you are using your backflushing solution (Cafetto Evo 500g), it is very important to flush properly, and it’s always recommended to run a discard shot or two after backflushing.

We recommend coffee machine service regularly, and our coffee machine repairs team can visit you at any time in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Think about a monthly service schedule to ensure your machine is always working at the highest level.
