As part of the Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group, we touched down in Aotearoa in 2014 following the acquisition of Espressoworkz Ltd., and we have been championing top-notch coffee in every corner of the country ever since.
An acquisition was our avenue into this gorgeous part of the world, and now we are excited to announce two sister companies coming together as Segafredo Zanetti seeks to further deepen and expand the quality and range of coffee we can offer to our customers.
Recently, we were honoured to join forces with Coffex, a staple brand driven by roasters who want to make great coffee beans accessible to as many people as possible. This legacy brand has 60 years of excellence backing it, and with our partnership now moving forward, we wanted to shine the spotlight on this iconic company as a way of welcoming them into the fold at Segafredo Zanetti.
Meet Coffex, The Name in Wholesale Coffee in New Zealand
Coffex originated in Australia all the way back in 1959, a golden age for the beverage. With roots in Melbourne, the two founding Italian partners observed the rising star of tea and coffee as European migrants brought their beverages from shore to shore with them. That same year, they founded Coffex Coffee Roasters as a way to provide Melbourne with top-quality coffee.
Though it started as a small operation, with no more than ten staff running the building, Coffex grew steadily until 1996, when it changed hands and took on a period of accelerated growth. A move to Brunswick in the early 2000s prompted the creation of a state-of-the-art roasting facility, and as they say, the rest is history.
Coffex came to Aotearoa’s shores in 2003, quickly ingratiating themselves to the local café scene in more ways than one. Over the years, Kiwi coffee lovers, office workers, café owners, and home baristas have all come to rely on the quality of Coffex beans. And they are not the only ones.
As a brand, Coffex’s star has risen even further than their two Italian originators ever imagined. They took on the Asian market in the early 2000s and won the day, opening a second roasting facility in Malaysia and establishing themselves as a presence in the region for nearby countries to trust.
If anything, Coffex’s success is a testament to a worldwide love of coffee. From Melbourne’s coast to mainland Malaysia, with Aotearoa’s rolling hills firmly in the mix, Coffex has bridged oceans with their love of a well-roasted coffee bean. It’s proof that a good cup of coffee is a universal language, and yet another reason we are so excited to be bringing them into the fold.
The Future of Coffex at Segafredo Zanetti
You might have already noticed some of Coffex’s most well-loved coffee bean blends popping up on the Segafredo Zanetti shop, and this will continue as we continue to grow together.
While Segafredo has several lines of coffee beans already beneath our umbrella, we are so excited to bring Coffex’s coffee beans aboard to diversify the regions and specialities we are able to offer our customers. Here are just some of the blends you can look forward to:
- Classico Beans, a blend of 100% Arabica beans sourced from South America, Africa, and Oceania. Expect notes of milk chocolatey sweetness, with a warm undertone of roasted hazelnut and pecans on this medium-roast blend.
- Decaf Beans, which strike the most incredible balance of flavour and offer up the mildest hint of an addictive nuttiness. The Swiss Water decaffeination process makes this a warm and inviting drink, no matter the time of day.
- Scuro Beans, a strong and dark coffee with a no-nonsense, full-bodied Italian espresso taste. You might get notes of cinnamon toast and a lingering burnt toffee sweetness to boot.
- Superbar Beans, which are deeply loved for their rich and satisfying flavour. This is a medium roast with oddly fruity notes, offering up sundried fruit, toffee, and milk chocolate for a warm balance that makes each sip addictive.
